The jobless rated increased to 5.62 percent in July from 5.42 percent in June. Unemployment rose for the fourth consecutive month. Economists were expecting the jobless rate to be 5.99 percent. In July 2010, the unemployment rate was 5.70 percent.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the jobless rate was 5.27 percent during the month, down from last month's 5.77 percent. At the same time, the underemployment rate for the month advanced to 8.9 percent from 8.5 percent last year.
As munch as 59.3 percent of the population aged 14 and above, was economically active during July, the agency said.
