US Expresses Concern Over Imprisonment Of Tibetan Monk In Immolation Case

(RTTNews) - The United States has expressed concern over reports of a Chinese court sentencing a Tibetan monk to 11 years in prison in connection with the death of a young monk earlier this year.
A local court in China's south-western Sichuan province on Monday convicted Drongdru, a Tibetan monk, for "intentionally killing" Rigzin Phuntsog, the young monk who self-immolated at the Kirti Monastery in March. It is unclear whether he was accorded the procedural rights to which he is entitled under China's Constitution and laws and under international standards.
Responding to a question during a routine press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the Chinese government must ensure transparency and uphold the procedural protections and rights to which Chinese citizens are entitled under China's Constitution and laws and under international standards.
The U.S. government repeatedly has urged the Chinese government to allow access to Tibetan areas of China for both journalists and diplomats to report accurate information.

To resolve underlying grievances of China's Tibetan population, she urged Chinese leaders to address policies in Tibetan areas that have created tension and to protect Tibetans' unique linguistic, cultural and religious identity.
On Tuesday, the court sentenced two more Buddhist monks of Kirti Monastery to longer prison terms for having "plotted, instigated and assisted" in the death of Rigzin Phuntsog.
He set himself on fire on March 16 in an apparent protest against Beijing's rule in Tibet. His death had triggered protests in the region, prompting the arrest of some 300 monks at the Ngaba Kirti monastery.
There is no news of the detained monks after they were taken into custody by the Chinese security forces on April 21. China, however, has denied U.N. accusations that the monks were forcefully "disappeared," insisting that relevant local authorities are currently "conducting legal education for the Kirti monastery monks in order to maintain religious order there."
