(RTTNews) - French inflation, as measured by the harmonized index of consumer prices, or HICP, rose to 2.4 percent in August from 2.1 percent in July, the statistical office Insee said Tuesday.
Economists expected the rate to rise to 2.2 percent. On a monthly basis, the index advanced 0.6 percent, faster than the expected 0.3 percent increase.
The consumer price index rose 2.2 percent after a 1.9 percent increase in the previous month. Economists forecast a 2 percent rise. Month-on-month, the CPI was up 0.5 percent against expectations for a 0.3 percent increase.
The core inflation during the month was at 1.2 percent. Compared to July, the core CPI rose 0.4 percent. Energy costs climbed 11.9 percent annually in August, while logging a 0.4 percent increase compared to July.
Food prices were 0.2 percent lower than the previous month, but were 2.9 percent higher than a year earlier. The monthly decline in food costs can be attributed to the seasonal fall in prices of fresh products, the statistical office said.
